Acting early is key: the sooner you mobilize these mechanisms, the greater the legal and media pressure on the aggressor governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>UN Human Rights Committee (UNHRC)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the First Optional Protocol to the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, any person may submit an application for the protection of civil and political rights. <strong>individual communication<\/strong> before the UN Human Rights Committee (CCPR) against the State that has recognized its competence. This brief alleges specific violations (e.g. arbitrary detention, lack of due process, torture) and requests the Committee to intervene. Although these opinions are not legally binding, they constitute pronouncements with great international weight and can generate <em>provisional measures<\/em> to protect the affected party while the merits of the case are being analyzed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>UN Special Procedures (Rapporteurs and Working Groups)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Special Procedures of the UN Human Rights Council<\/strong> allow for agile mechanisms to be activated in the face of serious abuses. Anyone can submit information to special rapporteurs (for example, on judicial independence, arbitrary detention or privacy) so that these experts can send urgent communications to the State concerned. These pronouncements often have a direct effect on the conduct of the prosecuting authorities, especially if there is international pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Latin America, the <strong>IACHR<\/strong> can grant <strong>precautionary measures<\/strong> when it is demonstrated that there is an imminent risk of irreparable harm, such as arbitrary detention or a flawed trial. It also allows for the filing of <strong>individual wishes<\/strong> which may result in a report on the merits or even before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. Many businessmen have obtained international protection through this channel, forcing the aggressor State to halt proceedings or adopt restorative measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Coordinated international litigation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A strategic defense requires <strong>simultaneous actions in several jurisdictions<\/strong>. From challenging an extradition order, to requesting the cancellation of an INTERPOL red alert or pursuing civil litigation in foreign courts, the approach must be multi-channel. Mechanisms exist to challenge alerts issued for political reasons and to request their removal through INTERPOL's Commission for the Control of INTERPOL's files, provided that abuse of the system is proven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reputational restoration and financial reintegration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most serious damages of a political persecution are not always criminal, but rather <strong>reputational and economic<\/strong>.
